What does "百人町(hyakunin-cho) -a hundred people town-" mean?
私たちエリート日本語学校は、東京都新宿区の百人町(ひゃくにんちょう)というところにあります。
Our school,Elite Japanese Language school is located in Hyakunin-cho,Shinjuku-ward,Tokyo.
百人町(ひゃくにんちょう)ってちょっと変わった名前ですよね…
"百人町（Hyakunin-cho）" is a little bit unique name,isn't it?
＊"百人町" means a hundred people town.
どうして百人？何が百人？
Why a hundred? What is a hundred?
昔、百人ほどの町民が仲良く暮らしていたから？？
Because about a hundred townspeople used to live here in friendship?
日本には、不思議な地名がよくあるものですが、せっかくなので調べてみました。
We often find strange place names in Japan.
It is good chance to know,so I find out the reason.
実は、時代はさかのぼること400年くらい前、江戸時代に、将軍直轄の鉄砲軍団がありました。In fact,about 400 years ago,in Edo period,gun corps under direct control of Shogun were here.
100人の下級武士たちが組織され、彼らの組屋敷（といっても駐屯地のようなものだったらしいですが）がこのあたりにあったことからこの名がついたそうです。
100 lower class samurais were organized and thier living quarters were around here.Then ”百人町-a hundred people town-” was named.
新大久保駅裏のほうに、「皆中稲荷神社」（かいちゅういなりじんじゃ）があるのをご存じですか。
Do you know there is shrine "Kauchuinari-jinja" in back side of Shin-Okubo st?
「皆中（かいちゅう）」には、「みなあたる」という意味があり、大久保の百人組は江戸でも、一、二を争うほどの腕前がそろっていたそうです。
"皆中（Kaichu）" has a meaning of "shooting all straight".It said the 100 samurais had top level skill in Edo.
ですから、この神社、今でも、金運アップや宝くじ、かけ事など「皆中」にちなんだパワースポットとして知られています。
In that reason,this shrine is known as a spiritual site of luck with money,lottery and gambling still now.
細長く奥行きが長い路地裏は、この組屋敷の敷地の名残だったようで、そんなことを知ってまたこの町を歩くと、いつもとは違った感じでお散歩できますね。
The traces of the Edo period remain at the long narrow back street here.
We can walk in this town with new viewpoint after learning such a thing.
